Black Canopy Films

TVS-872XT brings the speed and flexibility for high-level film production.

  • Background

Black Canopy Films was founded in 2016 by Ryan Morrison and Joe Penna just before they started production on their first feature film - “ARCTIC”. Prior to this, the duo operated as MysteryGuitarMan Inc., which was primarily a YouTube channel that laid the foundations of their film careers. The MysteryGuitarMan channel allowed them to create innovative content which garnered over 400 million views. Black Canopy Films has since turned their attention to movies and television, with their latest feature film “Stowaway” due for worldwide release in 2021.

  • Challenge

Black Canopy Films have three staff members - an editor, an assistant editor, and a Digital Imaging Technician (DIT) and normally stored their footage on shuttle drives. From the sound room to editing room, they needed to physically carry this data before importing it to their NAS. To bypass these inefficiencies, Black Canopy Films required a new NAS that would provide the capacity, connectivity, and ease-of-use to quickly store and edit footage. High-speed access is also a must for streamlining workflows between staff members.

Solution

The TVS-872XT was chosen and installed in an editing room next to the sound stage. With two Thunderbolt 3 ports, the editors enjoy high-speed access to recorded footage while the 10GbE port provides the DIT (who was on the soundstage) with access to the NAS.

Result

With the TVS-872XT, overall workflows between Black Canopy Films’ staff members become more streamlined. The DIT can directly transfer data to the NAS, allowing editors to log, sync and assemble footage almost as quickly as it comes in. Staff in different rooms can quickly access the same folders over the network and watch new cuts at their own desks. Besides improving workflows, the TVS-872XT ensures their hard work will not be wasted, as Shared folders with flexible access controls prevents file conflicts and accidental overwrites, while their RAID configuration protects data against unexpected drive failure. Most importantly, the QNAP TVS-872XT is a significantly cost-efficient solution compared to shuttle drives in terms of both time and money.
